Is sunlight absolutely necessary for good health?

Question: Is sunlight absolutely necessary for good health?

(Posted by: Arminius on 2010-07-28 21:46:34)

OK, based on the first two answers it seems that the answer is actually "no, " since you can get the necessary nutrient (vitamin D) from a supplement. So I can take a vitamin D supplement and avoid the sun completely, and I'll be fine. Right?

Yes, it helps your body synthesize vitamin D, which is necessary for us to be able to absorb calcium from our food. Also the sun helps our brains make more of the neurotransmitters that ward off depression. If you aren't getting enough sunlight to naturally have enough vitamin D, its suggested that you take a supplement. Not really, you have to have your levels tested by a doctor, its really easy to over do vitamin D and its really dangerous. Not to mention the whole good for your brain thing. Protecting your skin from harmful UV rays is one thing, but I think that something else is going on here.

Too much vitamin D can lead to skin cancer. ive recently learned in school that the average direct sunlight a person is supposed to get a month is 10 minutes. getting burnt will kill your keratinocytes.
